Robin HIlton

Shore Crew

Robin Hilton is one of the world’s few professional female riggers – and the only one ever involved in the Volvo Ocean Race.
The 25-year-old Canadian is assistant rigger on Team Russia’s Volvo Open 70 and is responsible for the maintenace, ropes and splicing of its carbon fibre, 31.5 metre high, million dollar rig.

Position:
Assistant Rigger

Date of birth:
20-4-1983

Nationality:
Canadian

Hilton was a sailor first and a rigger second.  When she was 19 she sailed from Canada to New Zealand with her sister.  After that her eyes were truly opened to the yachting industry.  She started working on boats, but knew her dream was to work on a race boat.  “I knew I needed to learn some skills, so I worked for New Zealand Rigging and North Sails to learn the trade,” she explains.

Robin was rigger onboard the Open 60 Hugo Boss in the 2007 Sydney Hobart Race before she joined Team Russia in April 2008.  Robin will be travelling with the shore team around the world, waiting for the boat to arrive in dock when she and team members will be responsible for checking, mending, replacing as well as improving the rig.
